The Free Church of St. John

Mission and History

The Free Church of St. John was founded in 1864 just as the Civil War was ending as a place where all are welcome. From the start there was no charge for church pews, a new custom of that era for the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. The people of the then growing Kensington neighborhood north of Philadelphia were welcomed to the church, church yard and parish house and that is still the mark of the church today as activities and ministry continues in the neighborhood.

Grant Summary

This grant will go towards the removal of a storage container that has become a blight in the community and the installation of a new tool shed and seating area. This is the last major hurdle to beautify our green space, and have a welcoming and positive environment for the community. Our mission is to welcome people from all backgrounds and walks of life, while providing a safe environment for the community to engage with each other and nature.
