Beyond the Bars

Beyond the Bars is a student-driven, community-based music and resource connection program dedicated to interrupting cycles of violence and divestment while helping our students recognize their immense potential and bright futures. Our mission is to tackle systemic issues in our city, such as violence, by addressing root causes like historical divestment and trauma exposure. We aim to create an accessible ecosystem of support that introduces youth to the power of music, connects them with community resources, and platforms for leadership growth.

Starting in 2015 as a music program for incarcerated youth, BTB saw the remarkable growth of students in jail using music for healing and self-expression. Hearing their heavy experiences and the gaps in support before incarceration, we expanded to run community-based programs for youth affected by traumas like homelessness, abuse, poverty, and loss. To address these issues comprehensively, BTB partnered with over 50 local organizations and established music labs and programs in shelters, trauma clinics, foster care centers, schools, community hubs, recreational centers, immigrant and refugee programs, anti-violence initiatives, diversion programs, and those aiding youth affected by divestment.

Through collaboration, we’ve created 33 programs and over 45 musical spaces citywide. In these spaces, we connect youth to ongoing programming, a supportive community addressing their resource needs, and a platform for them to grow as leaders and teachers.
