The Simple Way

Mission and History

Our mission is to cultivate a neighborhood and a world where all belong and thrive together by encouraging people to come alive in their gifts and purpose, building beloved community across all dividing lines, and advocating for justice. We desire to care, support and bolster our immediate neighbors here in Kensington through listening, learning, and invitation, knowing that the story of our work locally necessitates us equipping and activating others to become compassionately involved in neighborhoods and communities across the country and world.

The Simple Way was established in 1998 in the heart of the Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia, positioned close to the intersection of Kensington and Allegheny Avenue after a group of college students had formed relationships with dozens of families experiencing homelessness who were settled in the area. Over two decades later, we are a small organization working with and supporting neighbors in building a neighborhood where we all belong and thrive. We run our programs from a property we purchased in 1997. For the past 25 years, we’ve lived and worked on Potter Street, giving out food in different iterations and having regular neighborhood celebrations – Mother’s Day, Easter, Back to School, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Grant Summary

This grant would support our existing programs while helping us improve and develop them further. Specifically, it would help develop our food choice pantry running in combination with training and community-building activities. In partnership with Esperanza Health Center, we began Hub for Health, a community resource fair, and in March 2024 we hosted a new Baby Goods Exchange event that will happen quarterly, redistributing quality used baby and children’s goods to our neighbors.

With the community center opening at the end of our block, we hope to continue and grow some of our celebrations and events using the larger classrooms and event space while we share our park and garden space for their patients and staff to enjoy. Over the past four years, we have redeveloped our gardens, repairing and establishing garden beds for growing fresh produce for our pantry. We have primarily used volunteer support for the garden, which we will continue to do. Still, with additional resources, we could develop job opportunities to help support our work. We plan to participate in a garden coalition for training and ongoing community support. We must trim trees, clean out a lot, and build additional garden beds to have our gardens working at full capacity. We anticipate doing some of that with this grant money and coalition support over the next year.

In 2023, we celebrated the days leading up to Christmas with stories of small things with great love from people in our community and organization. Here are a few highlights!
