Providence Center

Mission and History

At Providence Center, children are given a safe space to overcome trauma and grow to their full potential, teens acquire the skills and experiences they need to become role models and leaders, and adults find the confidence and skills to speak English. Our mission is to educate people to have the power and spirit to transform their lives and community. For over 32 years, Providence Center has been a pillar in the Fairhill neighborhood of North Philadelphia. In 1993, our founders went door to door in our community asking residents what they needed in a community center. To this day, we keep the spirit of our founders alive in our programming, ensuring that we remain flexible and responsive to the needs of the Fairhill community. Our programming began as a safe space for children and families, providing academic support and afterschool care. Over time, we have expanded our services to meet evolving community needs, maintaining a strong commitment to trauma-informed, high-quality programming that fosters resilience, academic success, and leadership development. Today, our Power Afterschool Program serves K-6 students, emphasizing social-emotional learning (SEL), academic enrichment, and leadership development. By integrating SEL principles, we equip children with essential skills such as conflict resolution, personal empowerment, and achievement motivation, supporting their long-term success. Our Teen Leaders Program extends this impact by providing 25-30 paid leadership opportunities annually for local youth, training them as mentors for younger students while equipping them with workforce skills, social-emotional development, and leadership training. Additionally, our Adult ESOL Program serves 200-300 adult learners annually, ensuring that language barriers do not limit access to resources, job opportunities, and community engagement. Community input is central to our work. Through focus groups, one-on-one interviews, and partnerships with local schools and organizations, we ensure that our services align with Fairhill’s evolving needs. This approach informed our recent strategic restructuring, which expanded operational capacity, enhanced bilingual staff support, and increased leadership development for both youth and educators. By strengthening trauma-informed practices and prioritizing culturally responsive education, we continue to build a foundation for lasting community resilience—one that empowers individuals and transforms Fairhill’s future.
