The Rebellion Circus Program

Mission and History

Rebel Arts was created to provide a place of belonging for underserved communities including Black, Indigenous, and Latinx individuals, to enhance their physical and mental health. Through circus arts & tumbling, we empower our communities to be bold & authentic with who they are. One of our primary values that push our work is accessibility. Rebel believes in removing barriers from enrichment and promoting inclusivity. Our sliding scale model for recreational classes remove financial barriers that have prevented the communities we serve from engaging in circus arts. We provide transportation for youth who may have trouble commuting to our location. Accessibility expands beyond ensuring that communities can participate as students, we also want to ensure they can have a space to develop leadership within our programming. It is why we have provided teacher training to promising students who show a passion for the art. It is why we have hired community members with existing relationships and trained them to be youth leaders. When it comes to inclusivity, our programs provide a sense of acceptance as we cater our instruction to each individual need. We accept students of all learning styles and disabilities. Rebel Arts is more than just a site for creativity, our movement classes help build confidence, resilience, leadership, and self-awareness tohelp our Rebels succeed in the future.

Grant Summary

Alyssa Bigbee DBA Rebel Arts

This grant will significantly strengthen our ability to provide accessible circus arts and enrichment programming in Kensington and Harrowgate, where artistic and wellness opportunities are currently limited. The Rebellion Circus Program, our flagship initiative, will expand to provide FREE circus arts & tumbling to youth from low-income families. With funding covering the salaries of professional circus coaches committed to educating & training Kensington youth, this grant will remove financial barriers. The program builds physical confidence, emotional resilience, and creative expression skills crucial for youth development in our community.

The ripple effects of this program will be significant. Research shows that circus arts programming can reduce stress levels, increase sense of self, and strengthen social bonds – crucial benefits for our community members who face higher rates of stress-related health conditions. It will also offer more opportunities for children who are differently abled physically and cognitively to get involved even if they are not interested in competitive sports. Our expanded youth programming will serve as a preventative factor against substance abuse and gun violence.
