Students Run Philly Style

Mission and History

Students Run Philly Style (SRPS) transforms lives through mentorship over miles of long-distance running and achievement. SRPS pairs Philadelphia youth, in grades 6-12, with adult, volunteer Mentors to train for a tremendous challenge – running a long-distance race. Through running and mentorship, youth build confidence, positive coping skills and connection to community. SRPS provides free shoes, gear, race entries and transportation, to and from events, to all enrolled to ensure equitable and accessible programming.

SRPS offered its first program in 2004 and in 2017, SRPS established itself as a 501c3, strengthening its fiscal stability and increasing opportunities for growth. SRPS has grown to be a leader within sports-based mentoring, collaborating with the School District of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office to create innovative opportunities for youth. In 2024, SRPS was awarded the grand prize winner of the United States Department of Health and Human Services inaugural Children and Youth Resilience Challenge for its work serving youth involved with the juvenile justice system. SRPS reaches students in every zip code in Philadelphia including school based teams within the Kensington, Harrowgate, and/or Fairhill communities. In 2024, SRPS is excited to be celebrating its 20th year of serving Philadelphia youth.

Grant Summary

SRPS will use its 2024 KCR Fund grant to support the implementation of a Community Outreach Program to help youth attending schools in communities facing high levels of adversity achieve positive youth development outcomes through enhanced team support. The Community Outreach program will serve as a scaled enhancement of the SRPS model. Funds will be used to support youth and volunteer Mentor participation in up to 5 races, including free transportation to and from race events. Funds will also support the introduction of a free restorative intervention via Drexel University’s Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice’s Healing Hurt People program as well as support a new full-time Community Outreach Manager to implement this work.

In 2022, SPRS worked with Brooks to create a short film documenting the experiences of high school junior Jaiden, and his teacher and Mentor Kaley, as they established a team of students at Frankford High School to train together for their first Philadelphia Marathon. This project allowed individual students a platform to share their own experiences with the larger community.
