Fab Youth Philly

Mission and History

Fab Youth Philly (FYP) is a Philadelphia-based youth development organization that provides innovative, award-winning programming for youth ages 14-19, with a focus on workforce development programming for teens ages 15-19. We use a strengths-based approach with youth who face systemic or structural challenges, such as poverty, homelessness and physical, mental or behavioral disabilities. Kensington is one of two primary FYP service areas.

FYP began providing programming for children, teens and young adults across the city in 2015 and in 2016 saw an opportunity to start a summer job program to engage with the City’s Play Streets program. In 2017, FYP received funding from Impact Services in Kensington to pilot the Play Captains Initiative with 6 teens on 3 Play Streets over 4 weeks, which has grown each year. In 2022, PCI provided approximately 72 hours of programming on 13 Playstreets and at three playgrounds. FYP programming also includes Little Library Stewards (LLS), a Youth Advisory Board where members are paid for their participation, and the Lifeguard Certificate Training program which helps to address the shortage of lifeguards in Philadelphia while supporting teens with resume creation and the job application process.

Grant Summary

Fab Youth Philly (FYP)’s funding from the 2023 Kensington Resiliency Fund will support the expansion of our youth workforce development programming in Kensington, in order to include a Babysitting Certification Training Program. This funding aligns with FYP’s goals of providing the Kensington community with engaged, full time FYP staff members who are skilled in training youth, as well as providing youth with meaningful work that builds their social capital, increases their ability to get future jobs, and brings income to the Kensington community. This work will continue FYP’s efforts to expand job opportunities in one of our primary service areas, as well as continue our efforts to fund our staff in their positions.
