Kensington Soccer Club

Mission and History

Kensington Soccer Club (KSC) has a mission to unite the broader Kensington community with soccer and youth development programs for all, regardless of ability to pay. It began in 2010 with a simple idea: bring soccer to kids who do not have the opportunity otherwise, then build on that experience to help them improve their lives and turn their energies toward bettering the communities they live in. What began as a high school pickup soccer league has become so much more.

Over the last 13 years, KSC has expanded to: provide soccer to all ages from three to adult at more than 50 locations; offer a variety of leagues to meet every person’s skill set and abilities; support participants off the field with various enrichment programs and social services offerings; and increasingly scale our staff size to support this work. In recent years, KSC has been able to transition from a majority volunteer-led organization to hiring more full-time, permanent staff and in doing so reaching more children than ever before while ensuring sustainability into the future. One of the ways this has been made possible is through our School District of Philadelphia partnership where we have brought soccer to students at approximately 20 schools in the larger North Philadelphia and Kensington communities.

KSC is also a vehicle for community empowerment and opportunity: we work hard to connect our youth to civic engagement opportunities and connect people in our community to social services, such as housing and food benefits, and to employment opportunities inside and outside the club. KSC works in a holistic fashion with each family that participates in our programming and so we are intensely aware of the pervasive issues plaguing the Kensington community. However, as such, we are also witness to the immense strength and resiliency that lies within its residents.

Grant Summary

Kensington Soccer Club envisions a world where every child has access to safe play spaces, every person has the opportunity to advance toward a goal that drives their passion, and every community has the ability to thrive.

Our plan for returning soccer programming to Heitzman rec center will be largely aided by this funding. We plan to run soccer programs on a weekly basis during two seasons, as well as collaborate with the center to bring soccer to their summer camps and after school programs. The construction of a soccer mini-pitch will also serve as an enduring neighborhood meeting point where community members can gather and interact in a fun, safe environment through their love of the sport of soccer.

This grant will also help supplement the funding of the Community Engagement Coordinator position. The Community Engagement Coordinator will play an essential role in building community relationships and trust, helping KSC inform its decision making by centering the voices of community members, and leading the charge to expand the KSC community and build even more community connections and cohesion. This will be done through organizing events such as park and neighborhood cleanups, neighborhood events, and attending other events throughout the Kensington, Harrowgate, and Fairhill communities, along with the others we serve.
