Poetry in the Park

Mission and History

My Mission is to teach kids, teens, and Young Adults about poetry. More specifically, Slam Poetry. Slam Poetry allows participants to build confidence while working on writing, public speaking, and allowing their voices to be heard and their stories told. In a Neighborhood like Kensington, where most kids grow up never thinking their stories will be heard or they’ll go anywhere, Slam Poetry can be life-changing. I know It was for me.

Grant Summary

The Poetry in the Park Program consists of 10 poetry and photography workshops in which up to 40 teens/young adults will learn the basics of Slam Poetry in a safe and welcoming environment. Participants will be encouraged to write from the heart and build connections with their peers. The series will end in an open mic session, where all participants will receive new sets of writing supplies, printed copies of their poems, photos of the workshops and portraits of participants so they can keep and remember. I will also produce a video of the participants learning and participating in activities. The video will be played at the open mic event.
